Playlists end and algorithms repeat themselves. A good radio station does neither: someone chose the music, it never runs out, and you don’t have to decide what’s next. These stations stream around the clock with little or no talk. All of them play free on Skywave DX, straight from their own streams.

Ambient and downtempo

  • SomaFM Groove Salad: ambient and downtempo beats from listener-supported SomaFM in San Francisco. A long-time favourite for working.
  • SomaFM Drone Zone: slow, atmospheric ambient with no beat at all. Good for reading and writing.
  • SBS Chill: relaxed electronic music from Australia’s SBS.

Jazz

  • Radio Swiss Jazz: jazz and blues around the clock from Switzerland’s public broadcaster, with very little talk.
  • SomaFM Secret Agent: lounge and spy-film soundtracks, a lighter mood.

Classical

  • France Musique: French public radio’s classical channel.
  • WQXR: New York’s classical station.

Eclectic, mixed by people

  • Radio Paradise Mellow Mix: the gentler side of listener-supported Radio Paradise, hand-mixed rather than shuffled.
  • FIP: Radio France’s eclectic station, famous for surprising segues and short announcements.

Make it work for you

Lower the volume a little below where you’d normally listen. Instrumental music competes least with reading. And if a station suits you, like it: your likes appear in your library, and they help other listeners find it too.
